Dr Mariello (Gallipoli, Italy – 1994) holds a BSc in Industrial Engineering (2015), a MSc (2017) and a PhD (2021) in Material Engineering and Nanotechnology at the University of Salento and the Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies of the Italian Institute of Technology (Italy). He worked on flexible microfabricated transducers and nanogenerators based on piezoelectric and triboelectric materials for energy harvesting and biosensing. He fabricated hybrid nanogenerators with record energy generation from water-based sources (e.g. waves, raindrops impacts), as well as soft biosensors for gait walking monitoring or sensing human gestures.

He was a Postdoctoral Scientist at the École Polytéchnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) since February 2021 where he worked on implantable bioelectronics and thin-film encapsulations for electrical/optical recording/stimulation. He specialized in the fields of bioelectronic implants, in vitro/in vivo deployment, photolithography-based microfabrication, biodegradable sensors, materials characterization. He patented a universal, ultra-sensitive method for quantifying accurately water permeability through thin-film encapsulations for flexible bioelectronics.

He moved to the University of Oxford (Institute of Biomedical Engineering) in 2023 as senior postdoctoral research associate for investigating laser-micromachined advanced bioelectronics and electronically-controlled drug-delivery technologies for treating neurological disorders.

So far, he is author and co-author of 31 scientific publications, including high-impact peer-reviewed articles, 3 book chapters and 4 patents.

In Oxford, he took on different research and teaching roles and fellowships, including the Enterprise and Innovation Fellowship, the Ideas2Impact Fellowship and the role of MPLS Co-Chair of Research Staff Forum. He contributed to spread core concepts of entrepreneurship, enterprise and innovation, and he frequently participates to the University divisional boards to address issues for the sake of the staff members.

He served as mentor, supervisor and tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate students. In Oxford he has served as Teaching Tutor for the Engineering Science undergraduate course in 2023-2024 (B12: Electronic Devices); in 2024-2025 (B8: Materials); in 2025-2026 (B15: Control Systems). He was awarded the Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) for his commitment in teaching, mentoring and supervision.

He served as Reviewer for >80 journal articles, including Nature Electronics, Nature Communication, Science Advances and Advanced Materials, and Nano Energy. He was expert evaluator for several funding calls, including the European Innovation Council Pathfinder Challenges call, the French National Research Agency, the ETH Internal Funding program, the Linz Institute of Technology Young Career grant program, and the Royal Academy of Engineering Green Future Fellowship.
